Some neighborhoods are simply places to live. Others become part of who you are. Sun Bay South is one of those places.
For my latest neighborhood anthem, "Gandy Is My Bridge, Sun Bay South Is My Home," I wanted to celebrate more than just the Fourth of July. I wanted to tell the story of a community built on history, patriotism, waterfront living, and neighbors who genuinely care about where they live.
The Bridge That Changed Tampa
It's impossible to talk about Sun Bay South without talking about the Gandy Bridge. When George Gandy opened the original bridge in 1924, it transformed travel across Tampa Bay and forever connected Tampa with St. Petersburg. What was once the longest over-water highway in the world became much more than a bridge—it became a symbol of opportunity and growth for generations of families.
Today, Gandy Boulevard remains one of South Tampa's most recognizable gateways, and for many residents, crossing the bridge still feels like coming home.
A Neighborhood with American Pride
Sun Bay South sits just north of MacDill Air Force Base, and that military connection is woven into everyday life. Many mornings begin with the sound of reveille drifting across the neighborhood. In the evening, retreat marks the close of the day as the American flag is respectfully lowered. Those traditions are part of daily life here, reminding residents of the sacrifices made by the men and women who serve our country.
On the Fourth of July, that patriotic spirit shines even brighter. Flags line the streets, neighbors gather outside, boats fill Tampa Bay, and fireworks reflect across the water. It's one of the most patriotic places you'll find anywhere in Tampa.
Living on the Water
One of the biggest reasons people love Sun Bay South is its connection to Tampa Bay. Whether you're grabbing dinner at Salt Shack on the Bay, enjoying waterfront views at Hula Bay Club, watching sailboats at Westshore Yacht Club, or spending the afternoon around Westshore Marina District, you're never far from the water. That coastal lifestyle is part of what makes this neighborhood so special.
Local Favorites That Feel Like Home
Every great neighborhood has the places that locals proudly recommend. Start your morning with breakfast at Mama's Kitchen, grab a coffee from Kahwa Coffee, or pick up lunch from the legendary Mickey's Subs.
Seafood lovers already know Mr. & Mrs. Crab and Salt Shack are neighborhood favorites, while Hula Bay Club has become one of South Tampa's go-to waterfront destinations for relaxing with family and friends. Need to tackle a weekend project? Even the neighborhood Home Depot has become part of everyday life for homeowners who take pride in maintaining their homes.
These businesses help give Sun Bay South its personality. They're the places where neighbors run into each other and where new residents quickly start to feel at home.
Why I Wrote This Song
One of my goals has been to create original songs celebrating the unique history and character of Tampa's neighborhoods. Sun Bay South deserved one. This community blends history, military tradition, waterfront living, and local businesses into something that's uniquely South Tampa.
The chorus says it best: "Gandy is my bridge… Sun Bay South is my home." Whether you've lived here your entire life or you're just discovering the neighborhood, I hope this song reminds you why so many people are proud to call Sun Bay South home.
Happy Fourth of July, Sun Bay South! 🇺🇸 If you enjoyed the song, be sure to share it with your neighbors and help celebrate one of South Tampa's most patriotic communities.
